Mexico City Landmarks – Torre Mayor

Torre Mayor, the tallest skyscraper in Latin America, stands at 225 metres overlooking the nicest part of the city. It was completed in 2003 and it’s distinctive glass front and brink back dominates the skyline. But in a city reknowned for big, building shattering earthquakes, you might be asking who in their right mind would go and build this….?

Well, someone did, and I believe Carlos Slim, the chap I posted about the other day, had a big hand in it. But fear not. This tower holds the title of most earthquake proof building in the world, jointly with the US Bank tower in LA. Constructed to withstand winds of 160mph, the earthquake rebuffing features mean that a mega earthquake measuring 7.5 on the richter scale has a similar effect as a 22mph wind. Impressive huh. In fact it can withstand an 8.5 quake without any cause for concern.
