Reporting Crime and Punishment

Just to continue my slightly dark and depressing theme of posts of late….I thought I’d share this picture. The subject of how crime is reported in Mexico, that is to say very graphically, comes up regularly. Most recently in a comment. Has it always been this way? The painting below sits in the Museo de Franz Mayer and shows how miscreants were dealt with in the good ol’ days.

A couple of feet and lower arms chopped off ne’er hurt anybody, but teaches them a lesson alright!! I love the calm, expressionless look, seemingly painless, on the chaps face as he prepares to have his fourth and final limb forcibly removed. I guess that’s the 16th century’s version of sanitized news…
