Pixel Peeping

I’ve offered up the sum of my thoughts on the Fuji HS10. And have a collection of photos to support my reviews. But I didn’t scientifically review the camera. No pixel peeping from me. All I care about is what I get on my screen to upload to Flickr. And with that I’ve been very happy. Of course, I’ll be posting plenty more photos and videos from it.

But if you do need to read a review that’s more about pixels, then DPReview is the place to go. They’ve just reviewed the HS10 as part of a Super Zoom grand comparison. Where did the Fuji come? Middle of the road. That’s about in keeping with the other professional reviews I’ve read. Which camera won the test? The Panasonic FZ35, the very one I sold to buy the Fuji.

I’m not surprised. Nor am I regretting my swap. There are different factors such as price included, and the Fuji is by far and away the priciest in the test, which counts against it. The Fuji also has a few flaws, which I was aware of before buying the camera. They don’t affect what I want to do, or expect from, the camera. So it’s a non issue. They have plenty of nice things to say too though.

The Fujifilm HS10 is at currently $440 the most expensive camera in this group test but looking at the spec sheet the premium over the competition seems justified…

The HS10′s output is, viewed at a 100%, not too pretty, showing a mixture of noise, noise reduction and other sharpening artifacts. Again, this should not make you worry too much if you don’t usually produce large prints of your pictures….

With its impressive feature set and abundance of external controls the HS10 is almost in a different class of camera than the rivals in this test….

Reviewing my own photos, I personally prefer the output from the Fuji, but this is a subjective matter. I am surprised a little though by their conclusions regards noise. From my experience, I’ve gotten much nicer, and less noisy, photos from the Fuji. But again, science v screen. My photos are handheld, whilst perhaps DPReview used a tripod. This can affect the results. I also don’t examine the photos at pixel level, prefering to see how they look on my monitor.

The photos below, click here for the FZ35 image on the left and here for the HS10 image on the right, are the best comparisons I can offer. It’s not an entirely fair comparison. I’d say there was actually more light in the left hand image, but there are darker walls which show up noise more easily.

But at the end of the day, even if I prefer the Fuji’s results, there’s not an awful lot between them in noise. There is, in my opinion, a fair bit between them in other areas, and mostly in favour of the Fuji.

Shoot For The Moon

Since buying my new Panasonic FZ35, I’d been meaning to try and take a few photos of the moon. Test that 18x zoom lens. I finally got around to it the other night, from my back yard. It also gave me the opportunity of comparing the results to some photos I took of the moon a few years back with my old Nikon Coolpix 8700. A battle between a 12mp, stabilized 18x Panny and an 8mp, 8x zoom 6 year old Nikon. The result? The two shots on the left are the Panasonic. Much clearer and more detailed – especially when viewed large. The Nikon image, in fairness, is more heavily cropped. Of course neither matches a DSLR with a decent lens. You can see one of the FZ35 shots in large by clicking here, and the Nikon by clicking here.

FZ35 Gallery

When I buy, or am thinking of buying, or perhaps just interested in a new camera, I always check out Flickr to see what users of that model have been producing. Reviews are very useful, but it’s even more informative to see what the camera is capable of in capable hands! Here’s a gallery I’ve put together of photos taken by FZ35 owning Flickr users.

Bloggers Benefits

My blog is the non personal online diary of my life in Mexico. It’s neither about me, nor Mexico, but of both together. Mas o menos. If you get what I mean. But other people tune in too, from time to time, and not just my mum. Blogging has its benefits. I think I’ve built a little place on the web that has plenty of information that is of use to others. Perhaps it could even be said to have its own little community, with the same old faces commenting again and again. And it is, of course, a record of my wanderings across the country that I can refer back to.

But blogging has other benefits. A couple of years ago a couple of Englishmen happened to be coming over to Mexico to climb a few mountains, just before my own attempt on Izta. And they kindly rescued my adventure by bringing with them a pair of Gringo sized boots. Yesterday I met another person coming into Mexico from the US, who kindly brought with him a camera for me. The mysterious Mr K, a long time faceless presence on my blog, providing many of my posts with better context and explanations with his informed comments. Anyway, the same camera would have cost me more than twice the amount I paid had I purchased it in Mexico. I’ve thanked him profusely, of course. And once more – gracias amigo!

Anyway, I’m now a very happy chappy, in possession of my brand new Panasonic FZ35. I’ve written a few posts on my photography blog, First Impressions, a review and one with a short video sample, as well as uploading a few shots from my first 24 hours with the camera onto Flickr – click here to see those. Hopefully I’ll get to post many more photos in the coming months and years! The photo below was the first I took, inside a hotel in the centre of Mexico City.

FZ35 Video

My first video with the FZ35. Just a few clips as I walked to the market today to buy some chicken, bean sprouts and lemons to make dinner with. My first impression – not blown away. The stills have met my expectations, but the video, has not. The footage is a little wishy washy, although it does improve when I extend the lens. Panning isn’t brilliant either, although it never is with a compact camera.

What does work well though, is the auto focus. It might not be perfect, but its as close to perfect as I’d hope for from a compact. The lens moves smoothly too. Two caveats though. Firstly, I’ve shot the video straight from the box without altering settings – having seen other videos shot with the FZ35, I know the image can be massively improved. Particularly when watching it full screen. Secondly, viewed as is on this blog, it looks a lot better than up large in full 720p HD. The reality is I make my videos for the blog, to be viewed at the size you see. Not blown away. But not really disappointed either. Just in need of some practice time.
