Independence Day

September 16th is Mexico’s Independence Day, and yet another excuse for a fiesta with mucho tequila, cervesa and comida! We went to Paola’s aunt’s house last night for a big family gathering, with lots of the aforementioned booze and food. Served up was buckets of pozole, a choice of chicken or pork soup, chicken cochinita and other stuff I didn’t recognise but which tasted pretty good!

At midnight the tradition is to watch the telly as the President rings the bell of the Presidential Palace, shouting Viva Mexico! Last night didn’t go according to tradition because of Lopez Obrador’s protesters and threats of violence. So he went to the birth place of the revolution, Dolores Hidalgo in Guanajuato and rang their bell instead. At 11.10pm too, which hasn’t been fully explained to me yet!
