Mexico At The Oscars

The last year has been a big one for Mexico, where a film industry has crawled out of the dire government run 1970’s era and blossomed into a serious business. This year they got 16 nominations, which was as many as the UK and both were second only to the USA. They had to pick up a couple, surely?!

And they did! Four by my count. Three for Pan’s Labyrinth (made in Mexico and Spain) and one for Babel. Happy days! Although I suspect many Mexicans might be secretly disappointed…Babel had been nominated and tipped to win one of the big four awards – Actor, Actress, Director and Film. But alas, the Departed and Helen Mirren swept them away. Still, I believe that Mexico hadn’t before won an Oscar, so four on the one night can’t be grumbled at!
