The Zocalo at Christmas

Mexicans take their fiestas pretty seriously, and like to paint the town up a bit. If you’re thinking of visiting Mexico City it’s worth checking out when the big dates are so that you can take in some of the atmosphere. The biggest, I guess, are Sept 15/16 for Independence Day, November 1st and 2nd for Day of the Dead and of course December for Christmas.

All four sides of the Zocalo are covered in lights depicting Christmassy scenes, and the Zocalo itself is packed with (official and legal) stalls selling food, drink and other festive goodies. No chestnuts like I’m used to in London, but nachos and cheese work for me too. Which is just so American, by the way…
