Steve McCurry

I first took an interest in Afghanistan back in 200 when I read a couple of books by John Simpson, who had travelled there during the Soviet occupation, seeking out Lapis Lazuli and bumping into Osama Bin Laden himself. I highly recommend all his books. The news of the Taliban, the destroyed Buddha statues, 9/11 and the more recent books the Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini have continued my interest. I’d love to visit the country, but alas….it’s not really the best place to go as a backpacker at the moment.

The next best thing to do is follow someone who is brave enough to risk the trip. Steve McCurry made his name with a famous photo of an Afghan girl that was featured on the front cover of National Geographic many years ago. His blog and his main website both feature some amazing photography and stories to accompany them.
