Going Forward
There seem to be two lines of thinking about how we move forward in a coronavirus infected world.. The first is that we must reopen, and reopen now. Abandon most restrictions, including the 2 metre social distancing which is simply not compatible with real life situations. If we don’t, our already crumbling economy will be severely damaged to a point that a recovery will take perhaps decades. I think they’re probably right.
The second is that the coronavirus is a deadly disease and that without continued lockdown and extensive restrictions, hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, will die. Rolling waves of the virus will overwhelm health services and workplace absence will soar to barely manageable levels. I think they’re probably right too.
It’s problematic, isn’t it?
There’s no good answer. There’s no certainty. There’s no safe, risk free way forward. But I’m taking the attitude that we must move forward. I shall do so responsibly. Carefully. My risk taking will be calculated and balanced on both helping the economy and preventing spread of the lurgy.
So on that basis, we’ve booked flights to both Malta and Portugal later in the year. I will keep my fingers crossed that things get better and not worse. And I hope that I can put an end to my unlucky run, having seen my last four trips abroad cancelled due to assorted viruses.
