Neighbours Part Eight

The renters in Number 2 left suddenly yesterday. Without any fuss or bother, their worldly goods were packed up and loaded into the back of their VW estate. By sunset, they’d gone. Their departure has come as no surprise. We never really got to know them during their 9 month stay. We exchanged hellos when passing, nothing more. I took the photo when I was round the back, tending to my tomato plants.

The keys have been left on a window sill. The windows are all wide open. I suspect the letting agents have been informed what they will need to do to gain access to the flat. We await new neighbours, the fourth set in that flat in the last four years. We have our fingers crossed that they’ll be good neighbours. By ‘good’, I mean quiet, respectful and capable of putting the right rubbish in the right bins.

The chap at Number 5 has also gone. He said his goodbyes after nine years in his flat just a couple of weeks ago. We liked the chap in Number 5. There is a new For Sale sign up in the garden, but there’s no indication as to which flat is up for sale. Not yet. I shall monitor Rightmove, like the nosy neighbour that I am. Whoever it is has probably picked the wrong moment to start trying to sell though.

They should ask Number 6. She put her flat on the market last December, but has taken it off again this week. There is a trinity of troubles facing any sellers in this block at the moment. The economy, for one. A short lease is another. And next week, the building will be enveloped by scaffolding for 4 to 6 weeks for the roof repairs.
