Scorchio

It’s going to be a hot weekend. To be specific, it’s going to be properly scorchio. Which means gridlock on the roads, cheek by jowl sunbathing on the beaches and crammed trains. Roll on autumn.

The virus continues to dominate the news, of course. One particular line of thought keeps popping into my head. That is, I do hope our governments are more imaginative and humanitarian that governments in the past. When the economy hits the bottom, will farmers be throwing tons of unsold food away, even as people starve?

That is what usually happens. I guess it happens because we always fail to learn from the past. If food does start getting dumped, then we should be concerned. If those lessons have not been learned, it seems unlikely that governments are any more prepared to avoid what usually happens soon after an economic crash.

I console myself that I’m too old to be called up for service now. But I’m not convinced my bomb dodging skills are quite what they used to be.
