Holocaust Memorial Day

Auschwitz Birkenau is a bleak place. Especially in winter. Mrs P and I visited a few years ago, in winter. I took this photo of a rose placed by one of the rail transport carriages. It’s an otherwise unremarkable photo and not worthy of note other that it was the sole thing that was not utterly, depressingly bleak in the entire camp.

It takes one person to make an effort to try to make things better. Or at least less bleak. Nicholas Winton was one such person. I watched his appearance on That’s Life this evening. I’ve seen it many times before, but it never ceases to have an effect.
