Mrs P and I like to eat out now and then. Perhaps once a week. She always grumbles at my choice from the menu. I don’t actually need to look at the menu. If we’re at Prezzo, I’ll have the Vesuvius pizza. At Cafe Rouge, I’ll have the Boeuf Bourginon. At Nuddle Bar it’ll be the Lamb curry. At Loch Fyne I will always choose the traditional seafood option of Fish ‘n’ Chips.
It’s not than I am entirely unadventurous. But when we eat out at our favourite haunts, I know what I like, I’m always famished by the time we get there and if I start experimenting then I will inevitably regret it, remain hungry and wish I’d ordered my usual. I save culinary experimentation for when we are travelling or trying a new, posh restaurant in London or elsewhere.
But I decided to make an exception this week. We went to Loch Fyne to take advantage of their January promotion. Half price of all mains. A fifty per cent discount always tastes good even before the food is served. And seeing as there was such a generous discount on offer, I chose an extravagant dish that I’d just never normally splash out on. A whole grilled lobster in garlic butter with French fries.
How was it? It was ok. But. Well. You know already, don’t you? I wished I’d ordered my usual…
I’m jealous, we haven’t been out for a meal together in so long! Oh-micron is bursting at the seams here and spreading like nobody’s business but we are taking the plunge on Sunday to celebrate our youngest’s birthday, he was born on Robbie Burns day. Hopefully this summer we will go out more frequently as we are surrounded by wineries and elegant restaurants and then there are a host of mini breweries too! Fun times ahead.

It is nice to get out, isn’t it. Here’s to a more satisfying dining experience in 2022.

My strategy is to go down the menu and order the first thing that sounds good. My significant other agonizes over every item and changes her mind several times. My strategy works far better for me than hers does for her.

Oh, there is the agonising. I’m glad to hear it’s not just Mrs P who does that. I am often to be seen banging my head on the table when the waiter approaches for the fourth time to see if we’re quite ready to order yet. I was ready when he/she came the first time to ask about drinks…
