Dear sir,
Politics by its very nature is an emotive subject. Nonetheless, I’d thus far managed to get through my near half century of life without ever feeling the need to write to my MP. A drink amongst friends has always been a sufficient means to put the world to rights, and my ballot in elections served to give the political class my verdict on their, often questionable, best endeavors. I’ll come back to that last point at the end, shall I?
However, the Cummings debacle is a disgusting disgrace. Each stage of the saga simply pushes credulity further still. He broke the lockdown rules, in spirit and to my mind in law. A 30 minute drive to a beauty spot on his wife’s birthday was to test his eyes? Don’t be so silly. How stupid do you think we are? Seriously, I’d like an answer to this. As my political representative, just how stupid do you think we are? On a scale of ero to ten please, with ten being utterly brain dead.
I suspect many people have breached the rules here and there. My exercises often went a little over an hour. But there is pushing ones luck and then there is flagrantly flouting the law. This is a cut and dried matter. Cummings was caught. And Cummings should have resigned, there and then, with an apology. End of story.
But no, we are treated to a press conference which amounted to a confession, effectively followed by an instruction to ‘fuck off, plebs’. He insulted our intelligence, he insulted the families of those who’ve been lost during the pandemic, he insulted the best efforts of those of us who managed to stay at home.
But the worst was to come. There is no defense of Cummings. None at all. And yet, our Prime Minister with absolutely no care or regard for the thoughts or feelings of the entire population of the UK, stood up and did just that. Any questions as to whether the man is fit to hold office have been answered. The PM should be upholding the highest standards in public office, not brazenly permitting and then justifying law breaking when it suits him. This is the behavior of a tin pot dictator. He, more than Cummings, is now the problem.
I am very much a centrist, politically. My vote is up for grabs every time. I have voted for all three main parties before now. But I can assure you that I will not vote for a party for whom Boris Johnson is an MP, let alone PM. It is your responsibility as a Conservative MP to ensure that the man is held to account. You cannot have criminal behavior passing at the highest level of government. A vote of No Confidence in the Prime Minister and his removal from office is the very least that should now be reasonably expected.
Until then, I shall pay no attention to any lockdown law. I shall pay no fine if one is issued. Lockdown has been cancelled by Johnson and Cummings, and don’t think for a moment that many others will see it otherwise. I look forward to hearing from you as to how you intend to proceed in this matter.
Kind regards
