My One A Day

We are told that we may leave the house once a day for exercise. We shouldn’t, apparently, drive off to find somewhere to walk. Car parks are being closed to prevent such behaviour. I’m tempted to say that that’s bad advice. It’s difficult to maintain social distancing in towns and cities – surely a little bit of ‘spreading out’ would be a good thing.

I guess the problem is that too many people take the piss. And, quite frankly, I’m hugely disappointed at how many people are not taking social distancing seriously enough. I have a simple system. We should keep a two metre gap between ourselves and other people. So when someone approaches, I move to allow for a two metre gap.

That isn’t always very easy along the beach prom. Not when you have a group of four or five, walking abreast of each other, taking up the entire width of the prom and refusing to accommodate others. I’ve read that they can be fined by the police. I believe the fine is currently £1,000.

I say the police should shoot them, on the spot. That might sound harsh, but it’s just bringing forward their inevitable doom by a few short days, it’s less painful than pneumonia, and I’ll wager that fewer innocent bystanders will succumb to ricocheting bullets than will otherwise perish through being infected by the inconsiderate sods.

My suggestion isn’t likely to get widespread approval, especially at a governmental level. Not yet, anyway. Give it a few weeks, the mood might change, Till then, Mrs P and I will seek less populated areas. There’s a nice spot of woodland and a (closed) golf course nearby. That will be the location for the majority of our walks for the foreseeable future.
