Fujifilm X-T50

I waited years for its release. Fuji releases new models of its camera range infrequently, and I wasn’t going to trade up to a new shooter unless the spec was a substantial upgrade. The X-T50 is just that. I waited another year for prices to settle and availability to improve. Then I loaned one out and gave it a test run a few weeks ago, to make sure that it is what I want. And it was. So now I’ve bought it. After eight years of service, the X-T20 will be retired to my man-draw. And my shiny new X-T50 will travel the world with me.

It had to be a Fuji. I have four X mount lenses, and they all cost quite a bit of money. So it’s not likely that I’ll move away from Fuji unless I absolutely have to. They’re all decent lenses too. The photos on this page were shot using three of them: a 35mm f1.4 prime, an 18-55mm kit and a 50-230mm budget telephoto which is a great piece of glass for the money.

I had considered an X-T5, which is the model up from the X-T50. But it’s much too hefty. I like the compact size of t he X-T20/30/30ii/50 line. I also considered waiting for the XE5, which is rumoured to appear at some point later this year. It’s even more compact still, but loses the viewfinder. And possibly won’t come with the new 40mp sensor. Anyway. I like the X-T50 line and format. So I bought it.

The stand out differences between the X-T20 and the X-T50? Specs wise, the sensor has double the megapixels, it has IBIS worth seven stops and a higher definition LCD on the back. It also has a new dial for Fuji’s famed film simulations. I like the sims, but I prefer to use a custom programmed thumb dial on the back of the camera. So. Meh to the new dial. The camera feels more solid. And a tiny bit bigger. But when I put it next to my X-T20, I’m hard pressed to notice any real difference in size.

My X-T20 gave me good service for nearly eight years. I’d like to think this one will serve me well for a decade. It’s a big purchase. I think I’ve made the right decision, but time will tell. Follow along for the next ten years and judge for yourself…

  1. Congratulations those are pretty sharp images! Unfortunately those fab tools are outside my reach these days so miPhone is my go to.

The X-T50 would appear to be about £1291 on Amazon UK which isn’t chump change by any means but would include tax. Unfortunately here in Canada it is $2800 plus tax which is a mouthwatering $3136 with the kit lens. It just goes to show what tariffs and a decrepit dollar value do to disposable spondulix!

We hope to go wandering around Spain and Portugal next year for a month, one of my cousins bought a home there recently and we were thinking we might bum her sofa for a few weeks while sampling her cellar. I’ll probably take my trusty X-A with me and it still takes decent photos but the software is corrupted so it can’t send stuff wirelessly not that it did that very well anyway.

    1. I remember you mentioning this before….it’s madness that Canada is so expensive for electronics when they’re so cheap just south of the border. Or were cheap…not any more, thanks to Tariff Man.

I work that out to be about £1500 for body only model. That’s nearly 25% more than here in the UK. Mad…
